چکیده

We present an improved uvby-metallicity relation calibrated for F,G, and early K dwarfs, and an analogous uvby-Teff relation, both derived using a Levenberg-Marquardt minimization scheme. Our calibrations are based on 1533 stars which appear in both the Cayrel de Strobel (2001) metallicity compilation, and in the Hauck-Mermilliod (1998) catalog of uvby photometry. We also examine the speculative possibility of using uvby photometry to produce a uvbyplaneticity calibration. We conclude that while there is likely no strong photometric indicator of the presence or absence of short-period planets, the possibility of a spectroscopic indicator of planeticity is well worth examining. ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS uvby Photometry of stars with planets

The use of Strömgren uvby photometry is proposed as a simple tool for the estimation of effective temperatures and metallicities in stars discovered to have planets. Previous photometric calibrations are tested with available spectroscopic measurements and their application to stars without high-resolution spectroscopy allowed the determination of metal abundances for 12 additional stars with p...

Mining the Metal-Rich Stars for Planets

We examine the correlation between stellar metallicity and the presence of shortperiod planets. It appears that approximately 1 % of dwarf stars in the solar neighborhood harbor short-period planets characterized by near-circular orbits and orbital periods P < 20 days. However, among the most metal-rich stars (defined as having [Fe/H] > 0.2 dex), it appears that the fraction increases to 10%. U...

Consistency of the metallicity distributions of nearby F , G and K dwarfs

The consistency of the metallicity distributions of F, G and K dwarfs is studied. We present a new metallicity distribution for K dwarfs using metallicities determined from uvby photometry. There is a remarkable paucity of metal-poor K dwarfs in analogy with the G dwarf problem. We show that late-type dwarfs have consistent metallicity distributions. We also propose preliminary corrections to t...

On the metallicity of the Milky Way thin disc and photometric abundance scales

The mean metallicity of the Milky Way thin disc in the solar neighbourhood is still a matter of debate, and has recently been subject to upward revision (Haywood, 2001). Our star sample was drawn from a set of solar neighbourhood dwarfs with photometric metallicities. In a recent study, Reid (2002) suggests that our metallicity calibration, based on Geneva photometry, is biased. We show here th...

On the Metal-richness of M Dwarfs with Planets

Knowledge of the metallicities of M dwarfs rests predominantly on the photometric calibration of Bonfils and collaborators, which predicts that M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, including those with known planets, are systematically metal-poor compared to their higher-mass counterparts. We test this prediction using a volume-limited sample of low-mass stars, together with a subset of M dwarfs...
